ARE WE THERE YET?

Remember those trips with the family when you were young and how you constantly asked that question? It always seemed like an eternity when you were stuffed in the back of a station wagon and on a long trip. Well that’s the way we traveled anyway. Your trips may have been different. There were 7 of us so the car was always crowded. Mom and Dad sat in the front with my youngest brother. Then three kids sat in the back seat and I would get way in the back with the luggage. None of us were strapped in either but somehow we lived through it all. Anyway the point is there had to be a destination in mind in order to ask that question. Usually for us it was upstate NY to visit the relatives or Camp JOY (Church camp) in West Virginia. Both were long trips from Florida.

So this morning I was listening to the Steve Harvey show on the radio as I do every morning at 6:00. If you are ever up at that hour, I highly recommend his show. He starts his show each day with an inspirational message and some thoughts for the day. Today’s show was about having a goal or purpose in life. I pondered this as I drove in to work this morning. I have been working on a huge report at work. It is a continuing project and seemingly endless so began thinking about where I am going with it and to tell the truth, I have lost sight of my goal. So before I started typing this morning I reminded myself what my goal for this project really was. Now that I know what it is, I have found that my work is much easier. As long as I keep my final goal in focus, I can stay on track and put to the side anything that is unnecessary in me reaching my goal.

It’s the same with lifelong goals. First you have to have a final goal in mind or you will find yourself just heading out to work day in and day out with no end in sight. I dare say lots of people are in that rut. They go to work each day, living for the weekend but come Monday they start it all over again. No wonder so many people are going crazy these days. With all the stress in the workplace they have nothing to look forward to in life without a bigger goal. When I was young, I had the normal goals of becoming wealthy or famous in life. Now that I am older, my goals are less selfish and on a grander scale. So what are your goals in life? I know there are some good ones out there. And none of those Miss America type goals either. You know the ones “I want to do good things for good people and be a really good good person” :) I will tell mine if you tell me yours.

I've never been good at making goals for myself. I'm going to ponder it though after reading your post today. I think this weekend I'll make a list! I like the car photo!

Now that I've hit the 10th anniversary mark with DH, I'm aiming for the 25th anniversary mark. I don't want to hit 20 or 25 years and be looking for that exit-sign like my mom & dad were at that point.

I want to raise a daughter that grows up fairly mentally and physically healthy, who is an enjoyable person to be around and who is a great member of society.

I want to someday bear the title "library assistant" and not spend quite so much time on my hands & knees crawling around on the floor putting books away. (Not that this aspect of my job is ENTIRELY unwanted, but my knees aren't going to hold out forever.)

I want to paint the walls in my house!!!! I'm tired of white walls. We bought this place 8 years ago, we can darn well paint the walls if we want instead of living with white like renters.

How are those for some of my goals???? *grin*

Loved your wise and thought-provoking post Greg.
I would be humbled if even one person received hope and/or inspiration from the poetry I write and the paintings I do. To that end there is almost always a message in the poems if one cares to dig a little deeper - and the artwork is always based on Nature or some aspect of it.

Greg, every year our family would pack up our light blue volvo station wagon with mom, dad, three kids and a dog. We would drive from NYC to Illinois to Colorado to California... and back. It was something else. But I do love road trips. :)

I feel like Janice..if anything I do or say or paint or write influences one person to be understand their self better or become closer to our Creator...Then I will humbly know it was worth any effort.

Also, I agree with Paul...To Know HIM!!

Goal: To love and serve HIM, and to make HIM known.
TO love my family and serve them. To be used fully by the Lord!
I loved this post!! I remember long family trips in the station wagon as well. We used the stitching in the cushions as our "own space" dividing lines! Makes me smile to remember those trips to NY from SC!Thanks for bringing those happy memories to mind!

Goals... yes... I have lots of goals. But here are the big ones for now. :)

I want to have a comfortable job where I am happy and secure and work to the best of my abilities while inspiring others.

I want to take many vacations with my chilis.

I want to start a non-profit for people who can't afford dental visits, supplies (toothbrushes, etc), and emergencies.

I want to have a beautiful home--not necessarily a large fancy house, but a home. Somewhere that feels comfortable for everyone who visits me.

I want to raise happy and healthy, well-adjusted chilis who are able to take life as it is and know that
their choices have consequences and that they are responsible for themselves and their actions. Hopefully they will use these powers for good. ;)

Happy Monday.

Thanks everyone for all your answers to my question. My main goal in life is to make this world a better place to live in and try to make my children's lives better and easier than mine has been. Of course I do want to get to Heaven but I know that is where I am headed. I do think that this planet is our Garden of Eden and it is our duty to try to protect it. I hear a lot of people say that it is too late but I don't believe it. It is getting harder but it can be done. Don't give up the fight I say.
