What is it?

Can anyone identify these black mountains?

Actually they are man made. They are in South Carolina but came from Kentucky. They were moved by train. Give up? Ok it is a huge mountain of coal. It will be used to make electricity for your home.

Here is where the process takes place. Notice the clean air above the plant. The air isn't that clear above the paper mill just down the river. Everyone complains about the power plant but no one complains about the paper mill. Everyone needs power more than they need paper. People just like to complain.

Home invaders:

We put up these gourds as homes for the purple martins but these starlings took over the apartment. People go to great lengths to get rid of the starlings but try to encourage the purple martins. People are just plain Prejudice when it comes to birds. And other things.

Speaking of home invaders, power and dark things…..

As yet another politician comes under the gun for his bad decisions; I have to wonder if it is power that corrupts these people or are they already corrupt. I am not saying that all powerful people are corrupt. I do believe there are good people in positions of power. What I am saying is; when a bad person gets into a position of power he tends to further his corruption until it ruins him. I should say here that by saying “him” I could just as well say “her”.

In reading 2 Kings, I have noticed three kinds of politicians. There are those that are corrupt from the start. They usually force their way into their position of authority and then lose it by the same method. Almost never does a bad one turn to good once he reaches power. Second there are the ones that are good from the start and remain good throughout their term. These seem to be few and far between these days just as they were in the days of old. Then there are the ones that start out good but go astray once they are in office. These are the ones I wonder about. I wonder if they were just faking it to get into office and then got caught once they gained power or did something happen to change their beliefs once they were in office. I guess we will never know.

Have a great day,
Greg

My problem with the Spitzer mess?
1.Media suggesting that the public doesn't care that their elected leaders are immoral...yes, we do care!
2.Prostitution is a victimless crime...no, it is not!
3.This was a private matter...no, you are an elected official capable of being blackmailed, if nothing else!

I remember growing up with a coal stove but then the mine ran out and Dad converted to oil.
Love those gourds - are they from your own garden? I've tried growing them here but it's just too wet.
How true your message about politicians.

It is very discouraging the behavior of many of our politicians these days. I have no idea what goes through their minds. I like your picture of the mountains of coal though!
When you said the black mountains originally came from Kentucky, I knew it had to be coal.

You are right about politicians

Great pictures Greg.

Jeeze, home invading birds. The nerve of them. Don't they know those gourds were for the purple martins? ;)

Here we have lots of morning doves and I love waking up to the sound of them every morning. And oh yeah lots of roadrunners. I've you've never seen a road runner they are much smaller than one would imagine.
Happy Weekend!

LOL Even before you confirmed that those black "hills" were coal, that's what I'd figured. That's a sight we see a lot of as we drive to & from Anchorage for DD's hockey games, as we have to pass through Healy which is a town completely employed by a coal company.

That gourd apartment is great. I wonder how gourds would grow up here??? Maybe I'll have to try one plant this summer.

And, TAG!!!! You're IT!

I knew them for coal straight away too. Can't fool a Welsh girl about the black stuff :)
I think a person has got to be a bit wonky to even want to go into politics. It is such a dirty game, even if you are squeaky clean to start off with, chances are that you won't be by the time you're through.
Cynical? Little me?

Once I had swallows raising babies in gourds and then the sparrows came in and killed the little ones, took over the nest. It did give me reason to think negatively about the sparrows.

About Spitzer, what a turn about for someone that was a straight arrow always before. A psychologist friend and I were talkig about him today and we both wonder if something neurological has gone wrong in the last few years. His recent behavior seems out of character.

If you haven't been to D. C. before, I bet you'll find, as I have, that it makes for a wonderful vacation.

Interesting thoughts Greg on how people will like one thing or another and oh that complaining...

True too about those in power. When reading through the kings in the Bible, I always felt sad when I saw a good king "turn bad". It always happened when their heart was lifted up - pride. They got too self confident and not God confident. Then there was one terrible, wicked king that at the very end of his life, turned his heart over to God. Our God is a God of hope and I'm glad :)

Have a great weekend! My six-year-old is going to a friend's B-day party at Chuckie Cheese, do you have that in the South? Think lots of noise, lots of loud games that take tokens, and lots of parents chasing after their children to make sure they don't get lost :) A fun morning for sure. I think I'll opt for a quiet afternoon...
Ugh! I can STILL remember the SMELL of that paper mill plant!! That place gives off one nasty, stinky smell!!
Yeah, I would definitely have to agree...the coal plant air looks way cleaner than the paper mill plant air!!

Wonderful post again. So many interesing things to look at and think about.
First, being a native Californian, I didn't have a clue about those black hills.
I adore the Gourd Apartment Complex and would love to see how they decorate it.
I think your analysis of the political corruptions true ~~ straight from I &II Kings ~~ things like that just don't change.

Love your gourds. I always wanted to do that. Good insights about politicians. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
