Out of control

Sorry this isn't my usual upbeat post but I had to get this out. I will return to my usual humerous self very soon. :)

Have you heard the news? President Bush has signed some papers which will allow us to start drilling for oil in Alaska and off many scenic coasts which in turn will relieve the oil crunch. Our gas prices should be dropping any time now. The news hasn’t made it to the gas pumps yet though because I noticed gas prices were up again this morning. Gosh this all sounds too good to be true. Thank God the President came to his senses and allowed the oil companies to start drilling again. He has a heart of gold doing this for the American people.

In the words of Earl Pitts American:
WAKE UP AMERICA

Why now? Why after many years of fighting drilling at home are we now considering this? Could it be that there is a different reason than high gas prices? If they wanted to lower gas prices couldn’t the oil companies just do it? Aren’t they boasting the largest profit margins in history? The answer is YES they do have the largest profits ever and YES they could lower the oil prices. If they wanted to, the oil companies could drop their profit margins to a reasonable figure and they could do it today. But you won’t see that happen. So what makes you think that they will drop prices once they start pulling more oil out of the ground?

Most of you may not know it but Coal prices are up as well. In fact they have more than doubled in the last few years. But there is no shortage of coal. We mine coal here at home. In fact we mine more coal that we can use. So why are coal prices up? It isn’t because of the gas prices. The reason that coal prices are up is because the demand for coal is up in other countries like China. Since China is willing to pay more for coal, we send most of our coal over there. Then if we want coal at home, we have to outbid China so we have to pay more ourselves. China can afford to pay more for coal because they don't have government regulations limiting their emissions. So in a nutshell, the government says we can't pollute but they encourage us to sell coal to China who does pollute. Isn’t this free trade thing great?

Did you know that the oil companies already have wells in place that they aren’t using? So why do we need to drill in other places to get more oil when we can start pumping from existing wells right now? And why are we thinking that by increasing production of oil at home, our gas prices will go down. Are we betting that unlike the coal companies, the oil companies will do the right thing and forgo making more money in favor of helping out the American people. I will take that bet and tell you, that it won’t happen. The only people who will benefit by allowing this local drilling are the people who make money from the sale of oil. That would be people who own large amounts of oil stocks.

Remember what a CEO of a major insurance company recently said when asked about helping people. He said; “We aren’t in business to help people. We are in business to make money” And so are the oil companies. So ask yourself these questions. Who personally would benefit by the oil companies increasing production? And who is allowing these companies to increase production at home? It seems obvious to me. I don’t own any oil stocks. No one in my family ever owned an oil company. It’s time to wake up and smell the coffee. Big business runs the show and we are feeding them by allowing them to drill for oil here and sell it overseas. Prove me wrong oil company CEOs. I dare you.

Don't the Bush's own a lot of oil stock? Hmmmmm Something smells fishy here. No use getting upset about the whole situation. There isn't anything you can do about it. Time to start walking to work.

Have a great day,
Greg

I think we are safe, congress hasn't lifted their ban......which supersedes the executive ban.

I heard that the original executive ban was put in place by Bush Sr when he was in office, so that in the event that congress lifted theirs his would still be in place........

While I agree with your points here Greg I would like to point out one good thing as a result of these higher gas prices: people are starting to become more aware of how they took driving their car to the extreme. For example driving kids to school, driving to the corner store a few blocks away, driving all around the country just for the heck of it. These are examples of wasting gas but more importantly driving, like all the latest technology, has made people lazier and consequently much heavier. With the advent of remote controls, driving, computers, all the latest kitchen gadgets etc etc people no longer take time to just plain walk or do the work required. Walk to work if close enough, walk to the corner store if close enough, walk to school if close enough, walk in the park instead of being in front of the TV or computer all the time. Just another angle to think about :)

Really a thought provoking post...
I have to agree with Janice too, in fact, I'm getting my bike serviced and I found my helmet in the garage yesterday.

I need to walk more, ride my bike, and probably post less!!

Good article Greg.

Right on the money Janice and Wanda. The problem I have is this action is only a smoke screen which will take the pressure off of the industries who should be finding solutions to this problem. I honestly believe that we already have the technology to reduce our dependency on oil and coal but the government is taking action not to force the hand of the people who could make it happen. In other words, dependency on oil and coal may be bad for individuals but it is economically great for the government.

What will happen out of this is individuals will learn to cope and take actions like riding bikes and cutting back but the government will do as they will and keep the oil ball rolling. Thanks for your imput.

There's always seems to be an ulterior motive for why they do things. I'm glad you posted this today. We all need a wake up call...and a nice, reliable bike!

I sure wish I could do more walking... but when there aren't any sidewalks where you live... hmmm... think of how great it would be for our health too, all that walking, not to mention our pocketbooks...

I only hope that the democrats in congress continue to hold their ground. I think that if the ban was going to be lifted and managed for the best benefit to the people of this country, then I'd support a temporary ban. But that lift would stipulate that the increased oil production would be used to put into place a 100% more efficient public transportation system, including trams or light rail systems throughout all the towns & cities of our nation (whether above ground like most of Chicago's system, or below grown like the New York Metro). I would also love to see our trans-national rail system revamped and upgraded (and high priority on safety) for shipping products across country and passenger transportation in a time when flying becomes impossible once again. Also using the oil remaining to get into place solar and wind-farms, hydro-electric and geo-thermal power for the production of light and heat in our homes. And last but not least, a massive govn't-encouraged (was going to say sponsored, but that's not the right word) return to Victory gardening. Less emphasis on a nice lush green lawn, considerably more emphasis on lush green (and red, and purple, and yellow) masses of veggies and fruits.

If the ban were lifted with those stipulations (STRICTLY enforced!) for the usage of the oil, I'd be ok with it. For now though, seeing that a select few want to increase their profits through the hardships the rest of us are facing.... I'm hoping our congress-men and women continue to hold their ground on the ban.

Thanks for putting this out there, Greg!!!

Oops, I meant that I'd support a temporary LIFT to that ban, not that I'd support a temporary ban. *sigh* Thinking faster than I type, once again.

He might just need the money now that he will be looking for a job soon. Just a thought!

I was finally planted the lillies. I do have a question. I bought a tree at my local store. The thing is there wasn't any care instrutions or what kind of tree it is. I was wondering if I took a picture of it if you would know what it was? Anyway, I planted the tree and the lillies by each other.

Blessings,

Lori

Ugly truths. Seems to me like the systems of this world are falling and failing. Hopefully these things will cause people to look beyond government, finances, gas, etc for security and look to God who is our all in all. Still, praying that He would somehow, someway, be our help in the midst of it all.
